Story

Draft for Metrowest tourism

If you’re looking for something local and handmade, the Natick Mall likely wouldn’t be the first place you’d think to look. That’s what you think, at least! If you happen to find yourself wandering around the mall’s newest section, you’ll find Uni-T, a store quite unlike any other.

Open since November of 2012, Uni-T has grown into a hybrid of eco-friendly clothing shop, local art gallery and gift shop. Uni-T is owned and run by award-winning artist Eujin Kim Neilan.

Eujin's career kicked off after she finished her Masters degree at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where she studied illustration. For her Masters thesis project, she illustrated "In the Moonlight Mist", a Korean tale made into a children's book written by Daniel San Souci. Since then she has illustrated four other books, all featured in her shop/gallery that also hosts her trademark t-shirts and the handmade work of over thirty different local artists.

About three years ago, Euijn began her line of shirts, all featuring her own designs. Starting small - in local flea and farmers markets and shops in Boston, Eujin's shirts began to catch on. A small kiosk downstairs in the Natick Mall soon evolved into her very own store, in the mall’s newest section no less!

Eujin's t-shirts all have a common theme, which is inspiring people to fulfill their passions MORE! Each t-shirt has a different saying along with a hand drawn design to go with that saying, or passion. Uni-T's most popular t-shirt lines are "Grow More", "Laugh More", "Dream More" and "Dare More". The creative designs for each saying fit them very perfectly, making these t-shirts not only eco-friendly and soft, but also trendy and artsy, allowing the wearer to fully express themselves and their passions.

The most unique and wonderful thing about Eujin's t-shirts is that she hand draws each design, and silkscreen prints them in the shop which also serves as her studio. The eco-friendly shirts are made from bamboo and organic cotton, which means they’re super soft to the touch!

The philosophy behind Uni-T's clothing line is that everybody has a different passion, and when they come into Uni-T, they can find a shirt to perfectly express it!

Uni-T has grown into an art gallery that contains the work of about thirty different local artists, whose art ranges the gamut - handmade jewelry, pottery, glass, bags, cards, homemade soap and scarves! One great aspect about this gallery is that each artist has their own unique style and method of expression. With all these artists' work living together in the gallery alongside Eujin's t-shirts, everyone is living in unity!

The shop is curated with an eye toward artistry and well-being, and is infused with an atmosphere and handmade pieces honoring art, music, fitness, health, an eco-friendly environment, local farming, learning and most of all being yourself.

Uni-T is a beautiful shop that is worth checking out, as you certainly won't find any other store quite like it. See you in the studio!

Unity is the basic philosophy of Uni-T. Our interests and passions are different, and in that way we are all in unity. My T-shirts are about being yourself and inspiring one another.

Children's Books

Eujin's career kicked off after she finished her Masters degree at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where she studied illustration. For her Masters thesis project, she illustrated "In the Moonlight Mist", a Korean tale made into a children's book written by Daniel San Souci.

In the Moonlight Mist and her second book, The Rabbit and the Dragon King, are both ancient Korean folktales, which Eujin remembers as favorites from her own childhood. She calls these two books her "childhood dreams come true," because to create them, she used images she had visualized as a young child.

She believes that the most rewarding aspect of being a children's book illustrator is the freedom to imagine new worlds from a child's point of view. Eujin loves facing the challenges each book brings and exploring different approaches. In The Best Winds, she uses an abstract style of painting to convey the movement of the winds and the emotions of the story. In contrast, the kites adorning these paintings are concrete constructions of balsa woods and rice paper.

Imagine a Dragon consists of short tales from many different cultures of the world. The historical artistic styles of these cultures inspired Eujin's paintings for this project. For Fly Free!, her latest book, Eujin sought a different artistic approach to complement the gentleness at the story's heart. As it so happened, her home was being remodeled, and in the chaos of construction she found her inspiration: the odd bits of plywood lying around the house. This unusual choice of canvas, in combination with the warm, earthy watercolor tones, brought this tender story of compassion to life.
